‘The Boondock Saints’ Director Troy Duffy To Helm ‘The Blood Spoon Council’

When Troy Duffy arrived in 1999 with his directorial debut “The Boondock Saints,” he was arguably behind the times. The preceding years had seen countless imitators follow in the footsteps of Quentin Tarantino, with violent, dialogue heavy genre movies, but against all odds, Duffy managed to succeed. “The Boondock Saints” isn’t actually any good — it’s crass, dumb, and fairly forgettable — but it managed to find an audience and even prompted a way too late sequel in 2009, “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day,” also from Duffy.

Hugh Jackman To Star In Jason Reitman’s ‘The Frontrunner’

Hugh Jackman has consistently made interesting choices about what films he wants to star in. Obviously, most people know him as the superhero Wolverine in the multiple “X-Men” films he starred in, but when he’s not slashing people with metal claws, he’s taken roles in “Eddie the Eagle,” “Les Miserables,” and “Australia.” Now, according to Variety, he’s moving even further away from his superhero roots in a new film called “The Frontrunner.”

In “The Frontrunner,” Jackman plays the infamous Senator Gary Hart.

‘Baby Driver’ Star Ansel Elgort Will Play JFK In ‘Mayday 109’

Ansel Elgort looks to be ready to make his departure from the Ya-drama genre in a big way with Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver.” Now, according to Deadline, the actor is taking more steps away from being everyone’s favorite teen heartthrob by signing up to play President John. F. Kennedy in the upcoming, “Mayday 109.”

If you’re thinking that Elgort is a bit on the young side to portray a President, you’d be right.

Colin Trevorrow Responds To “Vitriolic Dislike” Of ‘The Book Of Henry’

We’re only halfway through the year, but one film that’s certain to land on many Worst Films Of 2017 lists this year will be Colin Trevorrow‘s “The Book Of Henry.” Following the blockbuster success of “Jurassic World,” the “Safety Not Guaranteed” director returned to his indie roots with ‘Henry’ but unfortunately, the results did not impress. Critics were ruthless in their reviews of the film, which mixed sexual abuse, a precocious leading kid, and dramedy tropes in a movie that was wildly uneven, and for many, just plain bizarre.

‘Deadpool 2’ Adds ‘Hunt For The Wilderpeople’ Star Julian Dennison

While “Deadpool” made big piles of money, and was declared the proof of concept that you could step well outside the superhero sandbox, take a risk, and have it pay off handsomely, let’s just say the movie wasn’t for me. I have very little interest in the follow-up, but now Ryan Reynolds and co. have provided one reason I might watch the sequel one day, even if it’s on an airplane.

First Nsfw Trailer For ‘A Bad Moms Christmas’ Gets Raunchy For The Holidays

An unlikely smash hit last summer, Stx Entertainment has wasted little time in going franchise with “Bad Moms.” After an ill-advised flirtation with knocking out a “Bad Dads” movie, the studio wisely realized audiences wanted more ‘Moms,’ and this holiday season, the gang is back.

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn have returned for this holiday-themed sequel, which keeps the R-rated approach intact.

Matt Reeves Talks “Noir-Driven, Detective Version” Of ‘The Batman’

While there’s been speculation that Ben Affleck might walk from his role as Batman in the Dceu, director Matt Reeves, who is slated to helm the solo outing “The Batman,” has put those fears to rest. In an interview with Getty, he said development on the movie is moving forward with Affleck very much as the lead, but perhaps even more exciting is what the filmmaker plans to do with the property.

New Trailer For Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Logan Lucky’ Has Nothing To Lose

There’s a lot of excitement this week about Edgar Wright‘s “Baby Driver,” not only because it’s a pure blast of popcorn entertainment, but because it’s the rare original film in a season of franchises. And before the summer is out, another movie is coming from an auteur director working with a great cast, and promising to deliver a wild ride: Steven Soderbergh‘s “Logan Lucky.”

Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Seth MacFarlane, Riley Keough, Katie Holmes, Katherine Waterson, Dwight Yoakam, Sebastian Stan, Brian Gleeson, Jack Quaid, Hilary Swank, and Daniel Craig star in the heist flick, that centers around two brothers who attempt to pull off a robbery during the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Lizzy Caplan Joins ‘Das Boot’ TV Sequel

Well over a year ago, it was announced that an 8-hour, TV sequel to Wolfgang Petersen‘s 1981 WWII German U-boat drama classic “Das Boot” was in the works. It was interesting news, and it made us curious, but as with anything else that happened eighteen months ago, we totally forgot about. Well, the project is headed to sea with some interesting developments.

Masters Of Sex” and “Party Down” star Lizzy Caplan is the lone Hollywood name boarding the project, that has lined up an ensemble which includes August WittgensteinVicky Krieps, Jonathan Zaccaϊ, Leonard Scheicher, Robert Stadlober, Franz Dinda, and Stefan Konarske

‘Halt And Catch Fire’ Season 4 Teaser Brings You The Early Days Of The Internet

Sometimes there are great shows that just don’t manage to get the groundswell of buzz they deserve, and frankly, it’s kind of amazing that “Halt And Catch Fire” has made it to a fourth and final season. AMC has supported the tech drama this far, but this year it’ll be shut down – but not before bringing viewers to the early days of the internet.

The new season will see the characters colliding with the early days of the world wide web, while bringing aboard a new actress for the final go ’round – “Veep” star Anna Chlumsky.

‘Baby Driver’ Director Edgar Wright Talks His Favorite Heist Films & Soundtracking Your Own Life [Interview]

If the Edgar Wright narrative has to revolve around “Ant-Man,” and to many it does, it goes like this: the English director of “Shaun Of The Dead,” and “Hot Fuzz” was all set to make a Marvel movie and it essentially was pulled away from him at the last minute as it was preparing to shoot. But rather than sulking or stewing, Wright came back with a vengeance to direct what is arguably the most thrilling summer popcorn movie of the year.

Lena Dunham To Co-Write ‘Toni Erdmann’ Remake Starring Jack Nicholson & Kristen Wiig

We could hardly believe it either when news arrived earlier this year that a remake of the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated “Toni Erdmann” was in the works. We were even more surprised that it would star Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig. Well, the bombshells don’t end there.

The Tracking Board is reporting that “Girls” duo Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner are in talks to write the film.

Neil Marshall Says ‘Hellboy’ Reboot Will Embrace R-Rating, Go Easy On Digital Effects

It didn’t take long from Guillermo del Toro revealing earlier this year that “Hellboy 3” was dead for a reboot to be announced. Indeed, an R-rated take on the material helmed by Neil Marshall (“Game Of Thrones, “The Descent“) and starring David Harbour (“Stranger Things“) is in the works, and there are already promises that it will be darker and more gruesome than what we’ve seen before.

The 50 Best Crime Movies Of The 21st Century So Far

If you go and see “Baby Driver” this weekend expecting another gag-heavy comedy in the vein of Edgar Wright’s earlier films, you’ll likely be in a shock. The absolutely tremendous car-chase-musical (read our review) is funny, sure, but that’s not its primary aim: in a big departure from Wright, it has more in common with classic 70s crime cinema than with, “Hot Fuzz” (for example) using the director’s formal gifts in service of a surprisingly hard-boiled heist movie.

Edgar Wright Hasn’t Seen ‘Ant-Man,’ Says He’ll “Never Be Pressed Into Bad-Mouthing It”

27 June 2017 10:24 AM, PDT

This week, Edgar Wright returns to multiplexes everywhere with his wickedly fun, crime musical comedy action movie “Baby Driver.” It’s a film that sees the director arguably at the height of his powers, with scene after scene featuring a dazzling combination of style and technique (seriously, the editing alone on this movie is nuts). For the folks over at Marvel, there must be some second thoughts about how Wright’s exit from “Ant-Man” went down, and while the director still feels the sting of losing that job, he’s taking the high road.

First Trailer For Lake Bell’s ‘I Do…Until I Don’t’ With Ed Helms, Amber Heard & More

27 June 2017 10:03 AM, PDT

After Lake Bell established herself as a writer/director with a unique voice with 2013’s “In A World…,” we were definitely eager for what she might do next. Well, she’s back behind the camera with “I Do…Until I Don’t,” and we wish were a bit more excited about this one.

It’s never a great sign when an indie movie skips every big time festival — Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, L.A.

‘Han Solo’ In Trouble & ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ Declines Domestically [Podcast]

27 June 2017 9:26 AM, PDT

Welcome to another edition of The Playlist Podcast, a discussion about film news and other film and television related items.

On this episode, I’m joined by Playlist Editor-in-Chief Rodrigo Perez to discuss two different news items that have connections to the larger studio discussions that we have been having on this podcast so far this year. We talked on a previous episode about Paramount needing a massive hit, and while “Transformers: The Last Knight” has amassed $268.26 million worldwide since its Wednesday launch, only $69 million of that sum is domestic.

4 Clips From ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Plus Full Star-Studded Press Conference

27 June 2017 8:51 AM, PDT

If studios insist on dropping clips from their films prior to theatrical release — spoilers be damned — they could do worse than Marvel has with this new crop of reveals from the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

One of the most anticipated movies of the year, ‘Spider-Man’ is now less than two weeks away. If early reviews are any indicator, it’ll also be one of this summer’s biggest box office hits (shocker).
